In her Montreal workshop, sculptor and model maker, Sylvette Chanel creates old-fashioned figurines in wax and plaster.
Her specialty? Statues of Baby Jesus. In fact, she creates Jesus statues in sun-bleached bee’s wax, completing them in every detail. She dresses her Baby Jesus statues, applies make-up and places children’s hair on their heads.
Sylvette Chanel has been making these statues for several years. In the past, only nuns in convents and cloisters had this knowledge. She is the first lay person in Quebec to perpetuate this art.
