An Austrian, Professor Emmanuel Hermann, is considered the father of the post card. In an effort to simplify the existing postal system, he developed a cardboard sheet that was to be distributed uncovered, namely without the protection of an envelope. The first official post card, which went into circulation on October 1, 1869, quickly generated a great deal of interest outside the borders of the Hapsbourg Empire.

In June 1871, Canada became the first country outside Europe to issue posts cards and allow their circulation within its territory. These were official cards, without any illustrations, which were used to transmit the government’s business messages. The private post card did not appear until the end of the 1890s, when Canada decided to amend the Post Office Act, in 1897, to allow private firms to produce illustrated post cards.
