Crosses and crucifixes

Crosses and crucifixes are major symbols in the Christian faith. Within Quebec, they made the sites of daily life sacred and encouraged piety. In New France, this symbolic object is the most common of all artefacts of a religious nature. We cannot affirm that domestic crosses were widespread prior to the end of the 17th century, but in the 19th and 20th centuries, domestic crosses became popular and there were many types of crosses and crucifixes. The bedroom, witness to all the passages of life, had to be equipped with a cross or crucifix. The crucifix, which was relatively easy to obtain, is probably the most common work of popular art in the repertoire.
